Blog Tour & Contest: The Eerie Firefly Rain

Firefly Rain
Author: Richard Dansky
Publisher: Gallery
Paperback: 352 pages

Summary: After a failed business venture in Boston, Jacob Logan comes back to the small Southern town of his childhood and takes up residence in the isolated house he grew up in. Here, the air is still. The nights are black. And his parents are buried close by. It should feel like home—but something is terribly wrong.

Firefly Rain creeped me out. It gave me shivers as I read it before sleeping, with my small tiny book light. I really wanted to reach over and switch on the bright overhead light. My husband didn't really need sleep, did he? The author kept me guessing right up until that last chapter when he laid it all out for the reader. Horror can be gruesome, shocking and in your face. It can also sneak up on you. It can give you that feeling that makes you keep looking over your shoulder. You know, the one that causes you to say "Hey, now wait a minute...". To me, that takes special talent and Richard Dansky proves he can creep out his readers with the best of them.

Firefly Rain, has an eerie, subtle weirdness. The characters are interesting and odd enough that the reader suspects everyone, including the main character, of wrong doing. Mr. Dansky gives us mystery, suspense, thrills and in some ways a bit of a love story.

I thought the author did a wonderful job of using issues many of us have experienced and giving them an eerie twist. How many of you couldn't wait to leave a small town to live a bigger and better life? Maybe you didn't come home as often as you promised, or you waited too long to tell a family member you loved them. These are things that all of us have struggled with in varying degrees. I think this made the book more poignant, giving it a little extra depth beyond the mystery and horror.

If you enjoy Stephen King or Dean Koontz you should give Firefly Rain a read. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

THE GIVE AWAY!
The publisher has kindly allowed me to give away one copy of Firefly Rain to spread the scariness. As usual, I will ask you a question. Simply answer it in the comments to enter the contest:

What is the scariest movie or book you've ever read or watched? Why?

For me it was The Exorcist. YIKES! I never did make it through the entire movie, though I did read the book when I was a teenager. I guess the green vomit frightened me more than the story itself:)

Leave your email in the comment if it's not linked to your profile. The contest will end May 2, 2010 and I'll post the winner on May 3rd.

The scariest movie I have ever watched is Paranormal Activity. It was scary for me because it seemed realistic in some parts, like it could actually happen. That freaked me out a bit.

The scariest movie I have ever watched was The Exorcist. The scariest book was the first time I read Salem's Lot. Actually I still dont really like to read that alone at night.

Scariest movie has got to be 'Event Horizon'. I know it's Scifi and not likely to ever happen to me, but the whole mood of the movie just creeps me out every time I see it.
As for books: they don't scare me that easily, but the stories by H.P. Lovecraft have a high creepiness factor.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose was by far the scariest for me ...and that was based on a true story. Yikes for sure.

Oh man, a while ago I watched this horror movie (relatively unknown) that was super-creepy, but I can't remember what it was called. The Ring really creeped me out too.

The scariest book ever was IT by Steven King *shivers*. Hmmm, movie? I usually block out the scary ones to avoid bad dreams. IT was terrifying because of the clown. Yup, the freaky clown.

The scariest movie I ever saw was The Omen. My parents went to see it at the drive in and I guess I was supposed to be asleep when it came on but no!! It was so scary and I was only like six years old. To this day I still haven't watched it all the way through!
Thanks!

Hmm...I try to stay away from scary stuff in general, but I'd say the scariest movie for me was ET. I watched it when I was young, and it completely freaked me out. Nightmares for weeks.

Thanks for the giveaway! The book sounds great.

I can't remember the last scary movie I watched that I didn't start laughing at. Sure, it might have been scary, but if you've got your friends around you and you start forcing everyone to laugh, it's not so scary.

I think the Goosebumps shows I used to watch (rarely...) as a kid were the scariest thing for me. The only thing that beats that is any ghost movie/show/documentary. Those things can keep me hiding under the blanket for nights on end.

Now I don't want to go downstairs to do laundry! I don't really need clean jeans for tomorrow, do I?? >.< Ghosts are going to kill me if I go down now!

I try not to read really scary books, but I have seen some really creepy movies. The Exorcist was probably the scariest. The Omen, Hills Have Eyes, Nightmare on Elm Street was scary to me. Stigmata was scary for me, I don't like scary movies with religious tones.

Amityville Horror was my scariest. Of course, I was 16 when it came out, so...

I have to share with you the one movie that scared me the most that I had to leave the theater. Are you ready? Promise not to laugh?

.... E.T....

Okay, well I was young - very young - at the time. But I could not make it through the movie. My mom was so upset, she really wanted to see it. Not that she yelled at me or anything. But ET for some reason scared me. :)

As for as an adult now... I'm not sure. I try to stay away from the scary stuff anymore. I think I am losing that adventure in me for the spooky movies. Although I find that the scary movies anymore are more gruesome than scary.

Glad you enjoyed the book. :)

Psycho...the original movie version. I still can see Janet Leigh showering and the knife lifted up in the air ready to strike. Had me peeking from behind the shower curtain after that!

IT would have to be the scariest book I've ever read.
I don't watch scary movies. Even as a kid when everyone was watching "Chiller Theater" I would sit alone on the dark steps with my hands over my ears. I didn't want to be with them but I didn't want to be upstairs alone either.

The scariest to me was Rosemary's Baby! I don't know why, but it haunted me for months....

I have to say Pscho, I was so young when I saw it.I could never take showers for years after that, of course I took baths instead without the shower curtain. Scary, scary movie for a young teen to watch. :)I have to say I have been hearing great things about this book so I have already put it on my monstrous TRL.

Ok so I actually have 4 movies after thinking
About it. 1. Nightmare on Elm Street 2.Seven
3.The Serpent & the Rainbow & 4. Strangeland.
Nigtmare on Elm st got me into scary movies
Even though I ended up sleeping with my
Parents.Seven just totally messed me up
I still can't watch it without it staying
In my thoughts days after seeing it. The Serpent &
Serpent & the Rainbow introduced me 2
Me vodoo. The 4th one my husband got me to
Watch Strangeland scared me so bad because
The killer preyed upon people off qa chatroom
He then would hold them captive, pierce them all
Over & just torture them Captain Howdy is
Insane.
As far as books Steven King is the master. He has me leary
Of man's bestfriend & clowns
